The tool of choice of the last 2 years has been sublime and mavensmate. But there are other tools. I started out with Eclipse because that was the only tool they had for editing code besides doing it in the browser. Now they have developer console which is buiilt into the browser.
The big plusses for me on sublime is sheer speed of use and simplicity.
I don't think any editors come close to how fast it launches and how fast it gets you to what needs to be done.
I have also tried IntelliJ Idea with Illuminated Cloud for a short time. It's a purchase only add on so I'm not always using IntelliJ. I would recommend it for users that already use IntelliJ. I'm an old java programmer and when I do have to put that hat on I use the Community version of IntelliJ because it gets the job done. And I don't even have the purchased version of IntelliJ because I only need it sometimes.
I do love that editor though and if I had to I would be using it.
